Professor William F. Pinar, British Columbia University


Professor W. Pinar will have a presentation with the title:
"What Knowledge is of Most Worth?"

Before moving to the University of British Columbia in 2005, where he holds a Canada Research Chair and directs the Centre for the Study of the Internationalization of Curriculum Studies, William F. Pinar taught curriculum theory at Louisiana State University, where he served as the St. Bernard Parish Alumni Endowed Professor. He has also served as the Frank Talbott Professor at the University of Virginia and the A. Lindsay O'Connor Professor of American Institutions at Colgate University. He has held visiting appointments at Teachers College, Columbia University, Ohio State University, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and the University of Alberta, among other institutions. He has lectured widely, including Harvard University, McGill University, and the Universities of Chicago, Oslo, and Tokyo.

Pinar took his B.S. in Education at Ohio State University, graduating in 1969. He taught English at the Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, Long Island, New York from 1969-1971, returning to Ohio State to finish his M.A. in 1970 and the Ph.D. in 1972. Pinar is the founding editor of the scholarly journal JCT, and with Janet Miller, the founder of the Bergamo Conference on Curriculum Theory and Classroom Practice, as well as the founder and now President of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies and the founder of its American affiliate, the American Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies.

    Pinar is the author of:

  • The senior author of Understanding Curriculum (Peter Lang, 1995),

    and the editor of several collections, among them:

He is the editor of book series in curriculum theory at Routledge and Peter Lang.
In 2000 he received the LSU Distinguished Faculty Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Educational Research Association.
In 2004 he received an American Educational Association Outstanding Book Award for "What is Curriculum Theory?"

The conference will be honored by the participation of
Professor Jack Miller, University of Toronto


Dr. Miller has been working in the field of holistic education for 35 years. He is author of more than a dozen books and his writing has been translated into seven languages. He has worked extensively with holistic educators in Japan and Korea and has been a visiting professor at two universities in Japan

Dr. Miller teaches graduate level courses such as "The Contemplative Practitioner", "Holistic Curriculum", and "Spirituality in Education". He also teaches a course on "Holistic Teaching and Learning" for Initial Teacher Education candidates

Dr. Miller has written a number of articles and books dealing with holistic education. His books include, "The Holistic Curriculum", "Holistic Learning", and "Educating for Wisdom and Compasison". He recently coordinated the International Conference on Holistic Education in October 2007. He is also one of the principal facilitators of the Holistic Learning and Spirituality in Education Network.

Dr. Miller's recent research focus has been on the long term effects of meditation practice for teachers

The conference will be honored by the participation of
Professor Thierry Karsenti, Universitè de Montréal


Thierry Karsenti, M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D., holds the Canada Research Chair on information and communication technologies (ICTs) in education.

He is also a professor at the Universitè de Montréal, in the field of information and communication technologies and their integration in teacher training and education. His technopedagogical achievements and innovations have been recognized at both the provincial and national levels.
He was awarded first place in the Prix du ministre de l'Éducation contest (1998-1999 and 1999-2000), and along with a team from Universitè du Quèbec, received the Prix Hommage 2001 from the Quebec government.
As well, he was awarded the Prix d'Excellence en Conception Pédagogique by the Canadian Association of Distance Education (2000) and the Prix PEDAGOGICA-RESCOL for pedagogical innovation in the integration of ICTs (2000).
In October 2000, he won the Prix quinquennal d'Excellence en enseignement and in 2008, he was awarded the Apple Distinguished Educator of the year (university level). He has also been recognized for his contributions, through research activities, to the quality of pedagogy.
His research interests center upon the pedagogical integration of new technologies, teaching practices and motivation.
